A precedent allows us to imagine what has already happened happening again. So, is there a precedent for urban disciple making movements (uDMMs)?

Listen to what Paul wrote to the believers in Thessalonica:

As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.

Let’s evaluate:

Urban – As many as 200,000 people lived in Thessalonica. This qualifies as urban even today.

Disciple MakingJews and Greeks alike, including many prominent women, honored (obeyed) the message of the Lord. This is urban disciple making.

Movement – And it spread rapidly throughout Thessalonica and beyond. This is an urban disciple making movement.

Can it happen today? Let me know what you think!

  1. It is these verses in 1 Thess 1 that have given me hope that something similar can happen today. I read them a few weeks ago and was given fresh encouragement to continue.

    1. Thanks for sharing your encouragement with me and others. I think the hope that we find in the Scriptures is essential to help us overcome the various kinds of opposition that we encounter in the process of discipling our cities. Kirk
